In this video, he shares one of the tracks he's just finished writing. Very cool to see how far Jin's come from those BET Freestyle Friday days. This week, I wrote about the Texas Board of Education's approval of a completely scrubbed social studies curriculum which would, among other things, counter the notion that the internment of Japanese Americans was motivated by racism. This, of course, did not sit well with many people. Here is the JACL's press release responding to the Texas Board of Education:
JACL Response to the Texas Board of Education - The Race-based Exclusion of Japanese Americans During WWII Differed Significantly from the Experience of German and Italian Americans

In response to the Texas Board of Education action to amend its curriculum to include information on the World War II detention of Germans and Italians by the United States, the Japanese American Citizens League (JACL) believes it is vitally important to clarify the record about the significant differences between the mass incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II and the treatment of German and Italian Americans.

The significant differences between the Japanese American incarceration and the treatment of German and Italian Americans is fully documented in the Report of the Commission on Wartime Relocation and Internment of Civilians (CWRIC) titled Personal Justice Denied. The CWRIC was established in 1980, pursuant to legislation enacted by the Congress of the United States to investigate the facts and circumstances surrounding the issuance of Executive Order 9066, signed by President Franklin Roosevelt on February 19, 1942. The CWRIC Report is based on the testimony of witnesses including former government officials and materials from government and university archives.

During World War II, the United States forcibly removed virtually the entire population of 120,000 Japanese Americans from their homes on the West Coast and incarcerated them in concentration camps in America's interior. This action constituted a policy of mass exclusion targeting all West Coast citizens and permanent residents of Japanese descent. According to the findings and conclusions of the federal Commission on Wartime Relocation and Internment of Civilians, a fundamental cause for the implementation of this policy was race prejudice.

The treatment of Germans and Italians was in stark contrast to the wartime experience of Japanese Americans. Although the United States considered the option of mass exclusion of Germans and Italians, these proposals were rejected as impractical, and instead the government pursued a policy of individualized scrutiny toward these groups based on their potential to engage in acts of sabotage or fifth column activity.

The German American Experience
In the months following America's entry into World War II, German Americans as well as Italians came under increasing scrutiny. By February 1942, the Department of Justice had arrested 1,393 Germans and 264 Italians.[1] During this period, German submarines repeatedly attacked and sank American tankers and other vessels along the East Coast and in the Gulf of Mexico. The attacks escalated and peaked in May 1942 with the sinking of 41 ships.[2] In addition, prior to the outbreak of World War II, the CWRIC Report noted the existence of active pro-Nazi operations among German Americans. "As late as February 20, 1939, the Deutschamerikanische Volkshund, popularly and simply known as the Bund, brought more than 20,000 people to Madison Square Garden for a rally to praise Hitler while denouncing Roosevelt and his administration."[3] The CWRIC further documented that the Bund was organized into chapters throughout the United States and claimed a membership of more than 200,000.[4] The submarine attacks together with the anxiety created by the organizing efforts of the Bund led to public fear of sabotage and fifth column activity.

On February 19, 1942, President Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, which authorized military commanders to designate military areas from which any or all persons could be excluded. The CWRIC Report notes that in the spring of 1942 the War Department considered whether Executive Order 9066 should be used to exclude all German and Italian aliens from certain areas.[5] The CWRIC indicated "there were no serious proposals for the mass movement of categories of American citizens of German or Italian descent, although local commanders sought the power to exclude individual citizens."[6] Similarly, the Tolan Committee, which was established by Congress to make recommendations on National Defense Migration, dismissed the mass movement of Germans and Italians. "This committee is prepared to say that any such proposal is out of the question if we intend to win this war."[7]

According to the CWRIC Report, the rationale for treating Germans and Italians in an individualized manner rather than implementing a mass exclusion was based in the size of the group and their political influence.[8] The population of Germans living in the United States in 1940 was approximately 6 million.[9] A policy of exclusion directed at the German population would have been impractical if the intent was to engage in a policy of exclusion and detention. Moreover, their sizable population brought with it a certain level of political influence.

A History of Racism toward Japanese Americans
The Japanese American incarceration was rooted in a history of race prejudice directed at Asian Americans beginning with the Chinese who first began immigrating to the United States in the mid-1800s. When California became a state in 1850, lawless violence against the Chinese was institutionalized through segregated areas for housing and restrictions on employment by public agencies and corporations. They were not permitted to become citizens, could not testify in court against a white person, attend school with whites or marry whites. Finally, the Chinese were excluded from further immigration in 1882 with the passage of the Chinese Exclusion Acts.

It was into this environment that the Japanese began immigrating to the United States in the 1890s and during the first two decades of the new century. The American agricultural industry recruited Japanese laborers to work in the sugar cane fields of Hawaii and the fruit and vegetable farms of California. From the handful who were in the U.S. prior to the Chinese Exclusion Act, the Japanese population increased to about 61,000 in Hawaii and 24,000 on the mainland by 1900. As long as the Japanese remained docile, their hard labor was welcomed, but as soon as they showed signs of initiative, they were perceived as threats to white dominance. The Japanese farmers, like their Chinese predecessors, reclaimed much of the less desirable land and developed these into rich agricultural areas.

As with the earlier Chinese pioneers, the Japanese were also denied citizenship, barred from certain occupations, forced to send their children to segregated schools, and prohibited from marrying whites. In addition, some laws were specifically directed against the Japanese, including the denial of the right to own or lease agricultural land.

Like the Chinese exclusion movement before, California lobbied the federal government to stop all immigration from Japan. As a result of these pressures, Japanese laborers were excluded by executive action in 1907, and all Japanese immigration for permanent residence was prohibited by the Asian Exclusion Act of 1924. The CWRIC Report affirms this history of racism with the following, "the exclusion and removal were attacks on the ethnic Japanese which followed a long and ugly history of West Coast anti-Japanese agitation and legislation. Antipathy and hostility toward the ethnic Japanese was a major factor of the public life of the West Coast states for more than forty years before Pearl Harbor."[10]

Expulsion and Incarceration of Japanese Americans
Because of the long history of prejudice and stereotypes, the public found it easy to believe false stories about espionage and sabotage attributed to Japanese Americans. By mid-January 1942, public opinion began to turn against Japanese Americans. Elected officials, city councils and civic organization in California, Oregon and Washington demanded the ouster and incarceration of all Japanese Americans. "On February 19, 1942, ten weeks after the Pearl Harbor attack, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, which gave to the Secretary of War and the military commanders the powers to exclude any and all person, citizens and aliens, from designated areas in order to provide security against sabotage, espionage and fifth column activity. Shortly thereafter, all American citizens of Japanese descent were prohibited from living, working or traveling on the West Coast of the United States."[11]

The Western Defense Command posted notices instructing all persons of Japanese ancestry to report to fifteen temporary detention camps, which consisted of fairgrounds, racetracks and livestock pavilions. It was from these temporary detention camps that Japanese Americans were later transported to ten permanent concentration camps. "This policy of exclusion, removal and detention was executed against 120,000 people without individual review, and exclusion was continued virtually without regard for their demonstrated loyalty to the United States. This was all done despite the fact that not a single documented act of espionage, sabotage or fifth column activity was committed by an American citizen of Japanese ancestry or by a resident Japanese alien on the West Coast."[12]

"No mass exclusion or detention, in any part of the country, was ordered against American citizens of German or Italian descent. Official actions against enemy aliens of other nationalities were much more individualized and selective than those imposed on the ethnic Japanese."[13]

In its report the CWRIC concluded, "The promulgation of Executive Order 9066 was not justified by military necessity, and the decisions which followed from it - detention, ending detention and ending exclusion - were not driven by analysis of military conditions. The broad historical causes which shaped these decisions were race prejudice, war hysteria and a failure of political leadership.[14]
Texas Board of Education, did you do any actual research, or follow any kind reasoning outside the logic of your own ass? Must you perpetuate ignorance and condemn future generations to state-sanctioned stoopidity? What is that they say about being doomed to repeat history? Yeah, Texas just brought us one step closer. America's children thank you.

Okay, everyone. Time for another Angry Reader of the Week, spotlighting you, the very special readers of this website. Over the years, I've been able to connect with a lot of cool folks, and this is a way of showing some appreciation and attention to the people who help make this blog what it is. This week's Angry Reader is actor/writer Ken Narasaki, whose theater adaptation of No-No Boy opens next week.

Who are you?
I'm an actor and a writer, and depending on what city I'm in, I could be Karen Narasaki's brother, Diane Narasaki's brother, Carol Narasaki's brother, Richard and Dorothy's son, or Rosie's dad or Sharon Omi's husband.

What are you?
I'm a Yonsei, if you count generations on my Dad's side, which I like to do because that makes my daughter a Gosei and that blows my mind.

Where are you?
Venice, California - the closest So Cal place we could find to San Francisco and Seattle, weather and feel-wise.

Where are you from?
Originally from Seattle, but I lived in San Francisco for fifteen years and LA for another fifteen.

What do you do?
I'm an actor and a writer...I had the good luck of starring in a German cop show as a Japanese homicide detective for a couple of years in Cologne and that kept me away from a day job for a few years, but now, I'm also a working stiff at one of the big talent agencies here.

What are you all about?
I'm all about Asian American theater. I feel a little bit like a dinosaur, but theater still floats my boat and I never got over this great production of GOLD WATCH that we did in Seattle in 1977 and I never got over the feeling that I got when I met all the crazy talent at the Asian American Theater Company in San Francisco. I thought back then that we would change the world, and though we might've fallen a little short on that score, I still loved those years, and I still believe everything we do makes a difference.

What makes you angry?
It makes me angry that we're still having to fight the same battles we were fighting 35 years ago. When I was growing up in the 1970s, I really believed that by the time I had kids, they wouldn't have to worry about being called names or being blamed for whatever problems racists like to blame on minorities. I was bummed when my own daughter had to listen to classmates saying they couldn't get into the schools they wanted because Asians got preference which, as I'm sure all your readers know, is NOT TRUE. Still, things are undeniably better now - some of my daughter's non-Asian friends called themselves "honorary Asians" because they wished they were Asian, and words like "Asian pride" are part of her vernacular - and I really think things like Angry Asian Man are making a difference. Your site always reminds of a line in one of Lane Nishikawa's poems: "Asian Americans - you CAN be bad!" And angry.
As you know, this week at a School Reform Commission meeting, several students and community members testified about the December 3 violence at South Philadelphia High School, and the ongoing concerns that still exist at the school nearly three months after the attack.

Among those who testified was the grandmother of 17-year-old Hao Luu, a victim of violence in December who was unfairly forced out of South Philadelphia High School by the principal based on unsubstantiated rumors of gang violence. Read more about his situation here: The Fall Guy.

Thankfully, I just got news that Hao Luu has been redeemed. The Inquirer reports that city school officials formally acknowledged Luu was not connected to a street gang. The District will clear his name and conduct an investigation into the District's actions: District clears S. Phila. student of gang charge.

But the broader issue exists: Hao's treatment has been part of a pattern of District response since the December 3 violence that has deliberately misrepresented what happened and who is responsible for the violence at South Philadelphia High School. Specifically:

Failing to acknowledge that the attacks reflected anti-Asian, anti-immigrant violence: "The students who were attacked on December 3 were targeted because of the color of their skin, the shape of their eyes, and the accents in their voices. Period. . . Rather than rush to the scene and decry racial violence, express concern for the victims, and commit to combatting bias, the District response has been to distort and minimize - dismiss, deny, and obscure the scale and nature of these attacks." - Ellen Somekawa, Asian Americans United

Not listening to students: Tram Nguyen of Victim Witness Services of South Philadelphia said one of the key elements to crisis response is to provide "ventilation and validation" to victims, but testified that there were "repeated obstacles put in place to make it almost impossible for the students to share their stories. When they were allowed to talk they were also told how much their story was hurting other students at the school."

Failing to act against staff who behaved inappropriately: Student after student detailed failures of school staff from security personnel who ordered students out of the building, to a principal who escorted students into a dangerous situation to a school nurse who didn't want to call an ambulance. Student Dong Chen said: "We can identify those who ordered us to leave" but students weren't asked about the failures of adults.

While the violence at South Philadelphia High School made the headlines on December 3, the real story has been int he applling way the District has handled the situation since. He died on February 26 after a car accident, but the announcement of his death didn't make the news until yesterday: Underground Japanese Beatmaker DJ Nujabes Confirmed Dead.

In addition to Japanese artists like Uyama Hiroto, Shing02 and Minmi, Nujabes collaborated with underground American hip-hop acts CYNE, Apani B, Five Deez, Substantial, CL Smooth, Terry Callier, as well as British rapper Funky DL and R&B; singer Dwele. He also owned record stores in Tokyo's Shibuya district, including the well-known Guiness Records and T Records.

Animation fans know Nujabes as one of the most prolific contributors to the background music and soundtracks of the popular anime series Samurai Champloo, which often blended the action and samurai genres with anachronistic elements from hip hop. Here's what happens when a lot of Angry Asians get together, wanting to make change. Recently, representatives from four of the largest national Asian American student organizations -- ECAASU, MAASU, NAPA and uNAVSA -- met and spoke about possibly working together and combining their resources.

The result: the Asian American Identity Project, which partners their combined networks with professional nonprofit resources. They're currently looking for qualified individuals to be part of their project team. Read on:
Want an opportunity to network with Asian American student leaders nationwide? A chance to tackle real issues in the community with professional, academic and social resources at your disposal? In one of the largest student collaborations to date, the East Coast Asian American Student Union, the Midwest Asian American Student Union, the National APIA Panhellenic Association and the Union of North American Vietnamese Student Associations has joined their resources and created the Asian American Identity Project. In an effort to create a united voice for the Asian American collegiate community and a youth driven solution to many of the problems that have resulted in discrimination and prejudice, our coalition of national student organizations is looking for determined, capable student leaders to form the Identity Project Team. The purpose of the Project Team is to meet the goals set forth by the Alliance of organizations to positively impact the status quo. As a member of the Project Team, you will have access to the combined networks of our organizations, professional development provided by our non-profit partners and funding from grants and sponsorships. The ultimate success and impact of this initiative will be determined by the drive and vision of those involved. So apply to the team and be the voice for your generation.
Sounds like things are still coming together, but this is a great idea -- why not try to bring together a group of the most capable and motivated students from these combined networks and partner them up with the nonprofit organizations that are working towards positive change in our community?

To apply, and to get more information about the vision and goals of the Asian American Identity Project, go here or the Facebook group page here.

I recently heard from the National Korean American Service & Education Consortium, who are among the many voices pushing for immigration reform in 2010. They'll be participating in the March for America event happening this Sunday, March 21 at the National Mall in Washington D.C.

There will be thousands of people from all over the country coming together to demand that Congress act now to pass immigration reform and move quickly to put all Americans back to work. Here's a message from Hayeon Lee, about her story and why's she's marching:
Last month, an elderly Korean American woman in her 70's came to our center. She lives alone in Los Angeles. Her son and his family had come to the states many years ago to take care of her ailing husband. When her husband passed away, her son could not leave his mother alone and ended up overstaying his visa. Although he was undocumented, her son worked hard to make a living and her grandchildren were excellent students. However, working long hours with low pay, not being able to obtain a driver's license and fear of deportation made life difficult to bear. After seven years, they made the painful decision to return to Korea—just one month before her granddaughter's high school graduation. She told this story with tears in her eyes and a wrinkled family photo in her hands. There are thousands of stories like this in the Korean American community that are not heard, and not acted upon.

Fortunately, some Korean Americans are breaking the silence - they are coming out and making their voices heard all over Washington D.C. On March 21, Korean Americans will march bravely for just and humane immigration reform as a part of a new movement for change. This movement mustn't stop with this march. The Korean American community urgently needs to break out of the thick cover of fear or shame and get involved. Immigration reform is not just about papers - it's about families staying together, young people reaching for their dreams and all people having the liberty to aspire for a better life and stronger America. Let's be heard. Let's march - both in D.C and in our communities to make real change happen.
That's one voice. How many API voices will be among those marching this Sunday? NAKASEC and its affiliates are asking you to march with them on the Capitol to send a message to President Barack Obama and Congress to keep their promise to enact comprehensive immigration reform in 2010. Here's some more information:
Our work is paying off. Last week, several grassroots and immigrant rights leaders met with the President to establish concrete steps to move CIR forward. Recent media coverage has highlighted the increasing momentum for CIR across the country. We need your help to send a strong message to President Obama and Congress that change takes courage and the time for change is now.

Join NAKASEC for the March for America in D.C. on March 21!

12:00 PM: AAPI Pre-rally at Franklin Park (near the McPherson Square Metro)
12:30 PM: Begin walk to Lafayette Park, joining tens of thousands of other supporters
2:00 PM: Arrive at the National Mall. Following the program, we march past Congress while the House is in session.
5:00 PM: March on to RFK Center

To get involved or to receive updates, contact opark@nakasec.org.
This is going to be a massive event -- they're expecting tens of thousands. For more information about NAKASEC's involvement in the March, visit the organization's website here.
Have you been watching America's Best Dance Crew. I missed last week. Here's a short blog post from The Orange County Register on the guys from Poreotix, who are representing for the O.C. and are still in it to win it: O.C. guys compete on 'America's Best Dance Crew'
Poreotix is the name of the Westminster-based crew of six guys. Poreotix impressed the judges at the Los Angeles auditions late last year. The group flew through the regional competitions and has survived four weeks without ever being in the bottom three. Judging is based on viewer calls and, in some cases, judges' votes for elimination. The winner of the show gets $100,000, plus the title of "America's Best Dance Crew."

The members of Poreotix are Lawrence Devera, Chad Mayate, Can Nguyen, Charles Nguyen, Matt Nguyen (none of them are related) and Justin Valles.

Here's a description of the dance crew, according to MTV: "These shaded showmen inspired by robots aim to entertain the dance world with their unexpected humor and revolutionary mixed style. Over the last couple of years, Poreotix has laboriously honed their craft of popping and robotic movement and are at the top of their game. The way in which the crew blends the different dance styles gives them a distinctive animated look, and their integration of humor makes their performances fiercely entertaining.

"Poreotix are true showmen and never perform without their trademark shades. They use them as a tool to hide emotion so they can provide unexpected twists in their routine, taking the audience from serious to funny without tipping their hand."
These guys are a bunch of hams, which would be kind of annoying if they weren't so damn good. They're awesome showmen, and just tons of fun to watch. This week, their challenge is to dance to Usher's "Yeah." Catch it tonight on MTV, and let's hope they make it another week!
Lt. Dan Choi, has become one of the leading voices speaking out against the U.S. military's ban on gays, has been arrested after handcuffing himself to a White House fence to protest "Don't Ask Don't Tell": Lt. Dan Choi Arrested After Handcuffing Himself To A White House Gate.

Choi led a group of about a hundred protestors in Washington D.C. He had been a Human Rights Campaign rally, and announced to the crowd that he was going to the White House to chain himself to the gates. And then that's what he did.

According to reports, police officers had blocked the gates of the White House with yellow tape and pushed back the protesters, who recited the Pledge of Allegiance and chanted slogans to repeal the policy.

I wouldn't worry too much about Lt. Choi. He knows exactly what he's doing -- a guy like that doesn't chain himself to anything without knowing exactly what he's getting into. But I have to ask -- Kathy Griffin, where were you? More, including video and photos, here: Choi Arrested at White House Gates.
Vivendi Entertainment has just released director Park Chan-wook's Vengeance Trilogy on DVD. Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Oldboy, Lady Vengeance -- if you're a fan of these dark, crazy, twisted flicks, this is definitely a must-have collection. From the publicity materials:
SYMPATHY FOR MR. VENGEANCE is the first film in Park Chan-Wook's acclaimed Vengeance trilogy. The sister of a simple and deaf factory worker, Ryu, falls ill and needs a kidney transplant, however he is not a match so he looks to the black market which he can't afford. After being fired from his job, his rebel girlfriend suggests that he kidnap the child of his former boss, Park. When the girl accidentally dies, her father seeks vengeance for her death.

OLDBOY is Park Chan-Wook's classic genre-defining revenge tale of a man who's wrongly been imprisoned for 15 years and is then suddenly released. Given money and a cell phone, he's challenged to discover who incarcerated him in the first place, but he only has five days to uncover the truth. Even with a mysterious young girl to help him, his tortures have just begun. Cannes-winner championed by Tarantino, OLDBOY regularly appeared in top ten best movie polls across the country and is listed as one of the all-time best films as rated by IMDB users.

LADY VENGEANCE, the final film in the trilogy was created by Chan-Wook for his daughter. After being wrongfully convicted of kidnapping and murdering a young child, a beautiful young woman (Lee Young-ae) is imprisoned for 13 years. While in prison she gains the respect and loyalty of her fellow cellmates, all the while plotting her vendetta on the man responsible (OLDBOY's Choi Min-Sik). Upon her release she sets in motion an elaborate plan of retribution, but what she discovers is a truth so horrifying, even revenge doesn't seem punishment enough.

Each film is recorded in their original language (Korean) and offer English and Spanish subtitles. Many community members came in support of a 17-year-old Vietnamese student named Hao Luu: Asians tell of anguish over S. Phila. attacks..
Hao Luu's troubles began Dec. 2 when, Asian activists say, he was accosted in the hall of South Philadelphia High by a student who yanked the earphones out of his ears.

After school that day, Luu was followed by 10 to 15 students and beaten so badly that he vomited.

What followed over the next two months outraged Asian advocates: Luu was ordered transferred from the school, despite having won his case at a disciplinary hearing. He was accused of being in a gang, an allegation strongly denied by his family. At one point, officials accused Luu of taking part in a fight in 2008 - a time when he was living in Virginia, according to his family and supporters.

The case of Luu, a 17-year-old immigrant student from Vietnam, shines light on how the school district is handling students accused of playing a role in the violence that enveloped the school Dec. 3.

Yesterday, Luu's grandmother Suong Nguyen testified to the School Reform Commission, seemingly stunned by how her grandson's life has unfolded since Dec. 2. She was one of 19 to address the commission on the attacks on students at South Philadelphia High.

"Please, ladies and gentlemen," she said tearfully, speaking through a translator, "reveal Hao's case and help him clear from the wrongful accusations. . . . We would like to request for Hao's reputation to be restored."

She said that principal LaGreta Brown had promised to send a letter clearing Luu of any wrongdoing or gang affiliation, but that none had been received.
The official school district inquiry blamed the violence on unsubstantiated rumors that followed an after-school altercation between Asian and African American students the previous day -- a finding that has been widely disputed.

Over three months after these attacks, it's absolutely ridiculous that the school district has been dragging its feet to get to the truth behind what really happened. No student should go to school to be attacked or harassed, and no student should suffer the consequences of being wrongly accused of something he didn't do. The final season of the show has been driving me crazy -- in all the right ways. Can't believe there are only eight episodes left.

In honor of the show's final days, an artist named Jared Stumpenhorst has taken on a personal project to create new Lost-inspired art every day for the entire season: Lost 365. He's got some pretty cool images. This one's Miles, our favorite speak-with-dead-people character played by Ken Leung.
Last month, I wrote about John Suzuki, a former Chevron employee who was forced to take early retirement this month rather than risk his health by returning to work under a supervisor who harassed and threatened him, and called him a "stupid Jap": Japanese American Man Accuses Chevron of Allowing Harassment. From the JACL blog:
"Suzuki is continuing to ask organizations to write Chevron on his behalf. What is important to him, he says, is "the principle of the matter - racial remarks like this cannot be tolerated."

The points he wants organizations to make in their letters to Chevron are first, that Chevron conduct a fair and thorough investigation of his charges, an investigation by someone who has a history of doing evenhanded investigations, not by a management defense attorney.

Second, Suzuki wants Chevron to provide him with Kumagai's investigation report, and also to provide the report when a fair and thorough investigation is completed.

Last, Suzuki asks that Chevron fire Klaassen if it finds that Klaassen did call Suzuki a "stupid Jap" and that Suzuki be allowed to return to work at Chevron in a different department.

Leaders of Nikkei for Civil Rights and Redress (NCRR) in Los Angeles wrote to Chevron on February 10. Paul Osaki, Executive Director of the Japanese Community and Cultural Center of Northern California sent Chevron a letter on February 19.

Other organizations in Los Angeles, San Jose and San Francisco have also agreed to write to Chevron.
Racial slurs and discrimination cannot be tolerated in the workplace! If you are interested in helping Suzuki, and want to write to Chevron on his behalf, you should send letters to: John S. Watson, Chief Executive Officer, Chevron Corp., 6001 Bollinger Canyon Road, San Ramon, CA 94583. It mostly affects boys and is so rare that there are less than 300 people living with this disease. The median age of someone with this disease is 25 years old. Here's a message from Connor's Aunt:
This is Connor, my nephew.

Connor is my brother's only child. He's a beautiful 5 year old with a sweet disposition and an amazing way with any kind of gadget or computer. He's an avid swimmer, loves all things Ben10, and considers the little mermaid Ariel his girlfriend.

We just learned that he has X-linked hyper IGM. This clinical sounding disease is a devastating immuno-deficiency. The 1 in a million diagnosed with this condition usually succumb to liver cirrhosis or lung infection during childhood, the lucky few may survive into their mid-20's.

Connor's dad says Connor never complains about the many needles that the nurses poke him with during his monthly blood transfusions or about the innumerable flus, stomach aches and other infections he's had since he was born.

Before I learned about Connor's disease, I never knew how risky and grueling a bone marrow transplant is. Chemotherapy strips away the existing immune system to make room for the new immune system that a donor provides. This is followed by 6 months post-operative isolation in a hospital room.

But it's the only hope he has, the only known cure.

I'm asking one thing. Please get your bone marrow typed and join a bone marrow registry. Just go to www.marrow.org to register online (promo code teamconnor). They'll mail you a free kit with cotton swabs to collect a sample. It's painless and doesn't cost anything but 10 minutes of your time.

Please help save Connor and others like him. Thank you.

Michelle - Connor's Aunt
Here's the simple truth: Connor's only hope for survival is a bone marrow transplant. His family is asking you to join a bone marrow registry. You can go to marrow.org to register online (promo code teamconnor). You could be the one who saves Connor or others like him. For more information about Connor's situation, go here.
Here's Congressman Mike Honda in the Huffington Post speaking out against Senator Lindsey Graham, who recently made remarks that Speaker Pelosi has Democratic Members "liquored up on sake" to make a "suicide run" to pass health care reform: Senator Graham's Inappropriate "Kamikaze" Remarks on Pelosi's Health Care Efforts.
As a Japanese American who was interned along with my family during World War II, I am personally disheartened that Senator Graham chose to use racially tinged rhetoric to express his opposition to health care reform. There is a way to engage in healthy debate without ostracizing the 16.2 million AAPIs in this country, who are an important part of this democracy and health care reform. Many face barriers to quality health care, such as the high cost of health care, racial and ethnic health disparities, cultural isolation, and language barriers, to name a few.

We must pass health care legislation now, and we must show respect for our fellow Americans as we do so. This bill is an important starting point for efforts to improve quality of health care, increase access to health care for more Americans, lower costs for working families, and protect small businesses. I am also proud that it includes provisions that begin to address the racial and ethnic disparities that so many vulnerable communities face.

This is no drunken "kamikaze" mission, but a thoughtful and essential one that will serve all working families in this country, and return control from the health insurance companies to the American people.
No matter where your opinion falls on health care reform, or what you think about the proposed plan, there's no reason to invoke such insensitive, "racially tinged rhetoric." It heavily samples the beeps and boops from Owl City's "Fireflies" (admit it -- you confused it with a Postal Service song when you first heard it too):
"The trouble with our times is that the future is not what it used to be." - Paul Valery"

Remember when The Future was dope? We were swerving on hoverboards in a neon-colored techno-utopia, planet hopping in spaceships, and dressing like Jesus but with pointy sunglasses.

Now, the future is a post-apocalyptic zombieland, the aftermath of some worldwide cataclysm we have yet to experience. Some cling to the old vision of the future. Others have bought into the new one hollering all that 2012 bullsh*t.

Meanwhile miss Future herself screams at us to leave her alone so that she can party like it's 1999, again. And we hear her. But first, we had to eulogize her. Last time we saw her, she was stumbling drunk on the street humming an Owl City tune that she insisted was a Postal Service song. She didn't believe us when we told her, and haven't seen her since.

In her honor, we sampled that tune, and wrote this song in dedication to the once and future Future. We miss you, but we can never go back to what we had.

But being who you are, you already knew that.
To download the tune, go to the Blue Scholars website here. They're also holding a "The Future is not what it used to be" Photo Contest, asking folks to submit photos inspired by this phrase. The deadline is this Friday, March 19.
